The original carnival showband
The association was formed back in 1963, but the actual first year of the unit was in 1962.
A group of friends from the Romsey area, ( who all had been youths together and joined the Army Cadet Force ) decided that due to their love of fun, and their ability to play instruments they would enter a local carnival dressed as Arabs, or as they titled themselves "The Sons of the Sand".
Causing a sensation they advertised for like minded gents to broaden their musical sound. As numbers grew an association was formed in 1963.
Since this time they have performed as far north as Manchester; ( a regular visit to Spalding in Lincolnshire still occurs ), as far West as Taunton, and east as Hastings.
Their credits abroad include France, Germany and Jersey. Obviously their television appearances are numerous, but one claim to fame is that they have been seen on the Australian networks.
The Romsey Old Cadets do not only take part in carnivals and displays they also have a serious side taking part in what they call green blazer events and these include the Rememberance Day Parade in Romsey, St George's Day Parade in Bishops Waltham and up until a few years agoe the Earl Mountbatten Memorial Parade in Romsey. Finally they have taken part in the Royal Hampshires Regiment Reunion Parade in Winchester.
